Jelgava during the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia

The Exposition “Jelgava during Duchy of Courland and Semigallia period (1561 – 1795)” explores the social and cultural development of Jelgava from the 16th century until the 18th century. Jelgava city and the area around it as a part of the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia for 234 years underwent drastic changes – in political, economic, material, and spiritual culture.

Since 1567 Jelgava was the duke’s residence, but since 1616 it became an official capital of the Duchy. Through interesting and unique objects such as coins, dālderis un grasis, minted in the Duchy and Europe, goblets of craftsmen made by goldsmiths of Jelgava, books, and other exhibits visitors can explore this long historical period. By the way, visitors are welcomed by Duke Jacob.
