Museum of Jelgava
Prehistoric and the Middle ages in Semigallia
From 2006 until 2019 Ģederts Eliass History and Art Museum of Jelgava had an exposition “Prehistory and the Livonian period”, renewed exposition is called “Prehistoric and Middle Ages in Semigallia”. the Exposition covers the period starting from the end of the Palaeolithic period until the end of the Middle Ages – the collapse of Livonia in 1561. Objects used to form the exposition come from Courland Provincial Museum’s archeology collection.
Renewed exposition maintained chronological structure and most of the objects. However, the solution of the exposition’s design is changed, playfully utilizing historic reconstruction elements. Additionally to the chronological heritage of Semigallia, visitors will learn about the formation of Jelgava in the Middle ages.
New to the exposition is the installation “Collision of Civilizations” which examines the collision between spiritual values and traditions of Christian culture and locals. A completely new addition to the exposition is changing exhibition “Newest archeological finds in Jelgava and its area”. Visitors will be able to explore newer and older archeological finds that had been deep in the ground, and thanks to archaeologist Andris Tomašūns, have made the Museum of Jelgava a collection of archeology richer.
